Do you constantly ask questions? Do you love to tinker, build with your hands? Or, do you want to explore science, but don't know where to start?
Science Olympiad is for you.
Science Olympiad has a long history of students who are intensely passionate about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics), to those whose curiosity drives everything they do. In school, and in life, the buzzword is always: passion. But how does passion get built? Where does it come from? What if I'm interested, what if I want to be good at science, but everything is just... overwhelming?
We believe that leaders are not born, but made. Spoiler alert: everyone here started out just like you. Don't count yourself out: highschool is precisely the time to explore! Science Olympiad is not a lecture hall: it's a community of fun, wonderful, resilient people learning about science in a way that makes sense to them. Ex. hands-on learning, discussion, self-taught reading, seeing something fail miserably, and coming back to build it again: YOU get to pick how & what YOU are going to learn.

If you're looking for an extracurricular to boost your college application, you really can't get better than Science Olympiad. Seriously. Every year the University of Connecticut hosts the annual Connecticut Science Olympiad Competition, where you can win individual as well as team recognition for your accomplishments. This event is made up of 45 highschool teams, and attracts over 1,000 highschool students. It's kind of a big deal.
Bonus: Science Olympiad has only one competition per year, plus one or two invitationals for practice. So, if you're worried about time commitments, with sports and clubs and homework, please don't worry. Our team is made up of people who are involved in their communities, and this competition takes place in one day.
Another bonus: This competition (our one & only) is famous for promoting team bonding. It sounds cliché, but truly: this is where you will make memories that last a lifetime.
One more thing: If qualifying, your team has the opportunity to progress to the Science Olympiad National Tournament!
Events change year to year, covering fields like: anatomy, rocks & minerals, astrology, chemistry, physics, biology, mechanical & structural engineering, and technology. (Hint: you get to pick which one YOU want to study). For some areas, you take a multiple-choice test. For others, you get to build! Airplanes and bridge models, coding a weight detector, include some of last year's projects. If this seems like a lot, don't worry; every single person started out just like you. Your fellow teammates will be right there to help guide & support you.
Each week, we hold two practices after school. This gives the team time to study and build for their events! The only requirement is that members attend one practice per week (can always contact club leaders/advisors if there are certain circumstances where this is difficult), but attending both is always welcome!
Science Olympiad is made up of students who are deeply motivated to make a positive impact on our community. We are athletes, musicians, people who speak a second language at home; some volunteer at EMS, while others love to draw & paint. We believe in equity and inclusivity, striving to support a welcoming environment for all individuals.
We are made up of people who are curious, resilient, and above all: kind. Every endeavor is a human endeavor, and empathy is the bedrock of creating positive change in the lab and in the wider world.
