Understanding Our World
Through Linguistics
Through Linguistics
The Cultural Linguistics Preservation Society, CLiPS, studies native cultures and schools around the world.
The written and spoken words are an art form and its values and traditions can be, and should be, passed down through generations. Often times, many cultures lose their language and therefore a connection to their roots. However, when a language is preserved, the knowledge, traditions and customs continue to nurture future generations.
The mission of the CLiPS club is to raise awareness of these issues via cultural outreach programs, fundraising and education, so that we may help these societies preserve their native language and history.
We have focused our efforts on the Native American indigenous cultures, which are at risk of losing this very important part of their heritage and ancestry.
CLiPS Initiatives
Wôpanâak Language Reclamation Project
For the last three years, we have proudly work directly with the Wôpanâak (Wampanoag Language) Reclamation Project, which focuses on returning language fluency to the Wampanoag Nation, descendants of the Algonquian Tribe, as a principal means of expression. CLiPs has collected and donated school supplies for their full immersion elementary school program.
During COVID, we partnered with the Mohegan Tribe in CT and established an annual cultural outreach program at Weston High School. Our goal is to expand this program to other Weston Schools and to the Weston community.
Hershey's Heartwarming Action Grant
In 2021 and 2022, we received a grant from The Hershey's Foundation Heartwarming Project’s Action Grants Program, which supports young people who are advancing inclusion, empathy, kindness and connection in their schools and communities. We've applied this grant towards spreading awareness of our program and giving back to the indigenous communities.
Our most recent endeavor will be to collaborate with the Darien Book Aid (DBA), an ALL-VOLUNTEER group of caring individuals interested in improving the world through literacy and education. They donate hand-selected books to communities in need around the world, including Native American and Appalachian groups in the United States.
Students from the the Wôpanâak Language Reclamation Project!
We have run supplies-drives and fundraised throughout the year to buy supplies for our friends at the the Wôpanâak Language Reclamation Project
