How is the course assessed?

The course is 50% controlled assessment based on a written assignment and 50% written examination.

What is the content of the course?

GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition is an exciting and creative course which focuses on practical cooking skills to ensure students develop a thorough understanding of nutrition, food provenance and the working characteristics of food materials.


Subject Content – What is covered?

Food preparation skills are integrated into five core topics:

Food provenance – Environmental Impact and Sustainability of Food, Food Processing and Production. 


What could I study Post-16?

Students interested in a career in catering or the food industries could undertake an apprenticeship in catering via The Guernsey Apprenticeship. 


What possible careers could I have?

Caterer  • Food technologist  • Chef • Kitchen porter • Catering assistant • Cake decorator • Butcher • Catering supervisor • Restaurant manager • Fishmonger 


Additional information

Students electing for this option should be interested in practical food preparation to restaurant standard as well as in undertaking written planning and research for it which includes nutrition, costings and time-planning.
