Engineering Level 2
Engineering Level 2
Qualification Level and Examination Board: Level 2 BTEC Technical Award in Engineering
How is the course assessed?
Unit one is an externally-set online examination.
Units two, three and four are assessed through work related assignments which are set and marked by the tutor.
What is the content of the course?
The course covers three of the units below over two years. Units 1 & 2 are mandatory for all students. Students will be allocated to either Unit 3 or 4 depending on the group size and workshop availability.
The engineered world. In this unit students investigate the processes used to manufacture modern products within different engineering sectors. They also study new developments in engineering technology that have an impact on life today.
Investigating an engineered product. Students discover how engineered products progress from a designer’s idea to the finished article. They learn how to ask key questions as a designer about the product e.g. what function it might fulfil, what the user’s requirements are and what materials could be used to make it fit for purpose?
Machining techniques. Students explore the best methods of material removal, the processes including milling, turning, drilling and grinding, and quality control techniques to ensure dimensional accuracy.
Electronic circuit design and construction. This covers the design of electronic circuits using input, process and output building blocks to solve problems. Students build circuits, working safely and using permanent construction methods. They learn how to ensure their construction methods are effective and are carried out using appropriate circuit boards, and test them using appropriate equipment.
What could I study Post-16?
BTEC Level 3 Engineering
Apprenticeship in Engineering
What possible careers could I have?
There is a very wide variety of careers in engineering, ranging from the aerospace and automotive industries to civil applications such as the design and management of construction projects such as buildings, bridges, transport links and sports stadiums.
