What is the content of the course?
Computer systems
Introduces students to the central processing unit (CPU), computer memory and storage, data representation, wired and wireless networks, network topologies, system security and system software. It also looks at ethical, legal, cultural and environmental concerns associated with computer science.
Computational thinking, algorithms and programming
Students apply knowledge and understanding gained in component 01. They develop skills and understanding in computational thinking: algorithms, programming techniques, producing robust programs, computational logic and translators.
Practical programming
What could I study Post-16?
A Level Computer Science: This is the most direct path to further study in computer science at university. It will deepen your understanding of programming, algorithms, data structures, and theoretical concepts.
Level 2 or 3 IT and Computing: A more applied version of computer science, focusing on practical skills and industry knowledge.
What possible careers could I have?
Many, including:
Technical Support Specialist: Provide remote or in-person assistance to users with hardware and software issues.
Web Developer Assistant: Assist experienced developers with website and application development tasks like testing, data entry, and basic coding.
IT Technician: Install, maintain, and troubleshoot computer systems and networks in corporate or educational settings.
Additional information
Students are expected to have an interest in the subject as we will be meeting some of the more advanced features of the ICT suite and the Python programming language. A strong mathematical background and keen logical skills are essential in this course.
