Today, students spiraled back to the SS standards and were introduced to our Pre-Colonial America (Geography and Exploration) Unit. Students made predictions about how our standards will connect to our first unit. We then went back to the Vocabulary Choice Board and students were given their first formal set of unit vocabulary terms for Geography. If time allowed, we labeled a map of NC as a class.

Homework: Select three boxes from the Vocabulary Choice Board and follow the directives using the Geography Vocabulary Terms. This will be due on Tuesday, September 5th.

1. Geography: The study of the physical features of the earth and the interactions of humans and the environment.
2. Latitude: Lines that run east to west and measure the distance north or south of the equator.
3. Longitude: Lines that run north to south and measure the distance east or west of the prime meridian.
4. Region: A specific area where the lay of the land and the habits of the people are much the same.
5. Elevation: The height above sea level.
6. Current: A flow of water within a larger body of water, such as the ocean.
7. Sectionalism: An exaggerated allegiance to local interests (extreme loyalty to only the area in which you live)
8. Shoals: Shallow areas of water along the Continental Shelf that made access to NC by ship difficult.
9. Inlets: Places where the ocean flows through the Outer Banks to mainland.
10. Sounds: Shallow bodies of water between the Outer Banks and mainland.
11. Cape: A part of land that juts out into the ocean
12. Urban: Characteristic of a city or town.
13. Rural: Characteristic of the countryside.

Tuesday, September 5th

Today, students turned in their vocabulary choice boards for the Geography terms. This will be graded and returned promptly. Students were given a study guide for their upcoming assessment on Friday, September 8th. We continued our pre-colonial America studies by looking at NC's geography before and as explorers arrived. We discussed the obstacles and challenges present by our state's geography. We also labeled regions of the US on a map and noted their geographical characteristics.

Homework: Begin/continue studying all material presented up until this point. We will continue to add for our assessment on Friday!
