Today, students took part in a class discussion about the events of September 11th. We read an article called "From Terror to Hope" about a middle school student that lived in New York on the day of the attacks. We also discussed Post 9/11 Muslim life and the idea of empathy.

Today, we discussed the early attempts to settle North Carolina and students completed guided notes. We also completed a "Migration Then and Now" activity to compare and contrast reasons Natives, Settlers, and People in 2017 migrate.

Today, students took part in a colony selection simulation where they had to review applications and decide which ten applicants would be best at setting up a successful colony.

Today, we learned about Pilgrims through a wRAP it up activity where students summarized information in the form of a lyrical poem (rap). If time allowed, we performed. If not, students will perform on Friday!

Today, students were introduced to our upcoming assessment - Natives and Newcomers Essay. Students reviewed the rubric and read about the Tuscarora War - one of the documents that will be used to support our writing. Students turned in the Tuscarora War Guided Questions to be reviewed by Mrs. Evans.

Today, students were given and Essay Calendar that notes our agenda/homework for each night over the next week and half as we plan, prepare, and write essays. Students also received the graphic organizer that will be used to gather information for the essay and started working with secondary sources about land conflict.

This week, students were in the Media Center typing essays. The final copy of the essay is due at the end of class on Friday, October 6th. Please refer to the Essay Calendar handout for suggestions on time management to be finished on time!

4. From Google Drive, click on the blue box that says “NEW”
5. Select New Google Doc
6. When the Google Doc opens, find the words “UNTITLED” in the top left corner and rename your file as “First Name, Last Name, Core #, N&N Essay” (Example: Lindsey Evans – Core 1 – N&N Essay)
7. Before typing your essay, share with your core teacher by clicking the blue box that says “SHARE” in the top right corner.

6. Click “Add” then choose where your file is located (file, USB, Google Drive, etc)
7. Upload, then Mark as Done
8. Congrats! You turned in your assignment!
