Students are introduced to the Language Arts classroom and the first unit of the year- Identity and Wind Beneath My Wings. This unit focuses on student exploration of themselves and influential people in their lives through poetry and writing.
Students create a "Identity Name Card" that encompasses adjectives, action verbs, and nouns all related to the student.
Homework: Talk with people at home, asking for adjectives to describe the student. They should come to class prepared with a list of 4-5 adjectives.
Students continue to work with adjectives, action verbs, and nouns through work in an "Identity" unit guide. Students will be able to analyze figurative language of a poem to identify its theme(s).
Homework: Students may finish the "Identity Name Card" if they choose to do so, but it is not required. Name cards must be complete by beginning of class Wednesday, August 30th.
Students begin work with infinitive phrases, action verbs, and grammar. They continue work within the "Identity" unit guide. Students will be able to analyze figurative language of a poem to identify its theme(s).
Students finish work in the "Identity" unit guide, and begin brainstorming and writing the first draft for the Identity poem.
Students continue writing their Identity poem and should have the first draft completed by end of class today.

As of Friday afternoon, students should be completed with both the outline & flow map. If they are not complete, it is homework.
