Reading
Mathematics
Algebra:
Students are learning about Systems of Linear Equations (and Inequalities) and how to solve them in 3 ways. We're wrapping up Graphing through a Ski Resort Project and will be moving on to Substitution. This chapter is a great way to review all of the graphing and equation skills that we've been working on all year.
Pre-Algebra:
Students have learned how to find slopes of parallel and perpendicular lines, how to graph horizontal and vertical lines, as well as reviewed Proportional Relationships and Unit Rates (a 7th grade standard) to prepare for more graphing!
Reading/Writing
Reading:
We continue to work on the Notice and Note Strategies for Nonfiction. We will start a podcast this week called Cellphones Rock to practice using the strategies. Students worked on reading an article together and we discussed how to write a quality response to a question. In addition, continued to work on Vocabulary and played a new game called Trash or Treasure with our Vocabulary words.
Writing:
Students are so excited to start creating their picture books. Some are using digital drawing programs to illustrate their books, and others are choosing to hand draw their illustrations. We will be ready for our writing celebration once we return from winter break. All picture books are due on Monday, December 18th.
All of my classes must turn in all missing work by Friday, December, 15th at 3 pm.
History
Students are using the database on Slavevoyages.org to learn about the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Students are asked to do a series of tasks that help them access the information on the site to aid in their learning about the topic. Through the lens of 8th grade US history we approach the impact of the slave trade on the United States.
