Review (Season 1):
Found through references and memes.
i didn't like the concept going into it, so i was skeptical. Still, I gave it a fair shot. hated it up until like episode 11-12 because the protag is such a loser that it literally ruins it for me but to be fair I knew that going into the series. eh whatever.
Review (Season 2):
well well well, look what the cat shit up. i have been adamant on rent-a-girlfriend being the WORST anime ive seen ever since I watched it around a year ago. The main character is SO cringe, the cringiest most loser character design Ive seen in a show (besides watamote), and the concept is so lame as well. A loser virgin broke up with his gf and he "rents" a new one? lame as fuck. weird as fuck, actually. i hated the show so much that I put it at the very bottom of my list, and it stayed there.
But season 2 really surprised me. This was the most surprising thing ive seen in an anime. i had the lowest of the lowest expectations for this season, yet it had story aspects that can be compared to your lie in april. not even kidding.
first of all, our mc. kazuya. the cringe loser. from the very first episode, he redeemed himself. he stood up and became a chad and actually said and did something not fucking braindead in the first ep of this season. halfway thru the ep, i was about to drop this season. but i wanted to give it a chance. i watched til the end of ep 1 and was shocked. from there on out, the scenarios, characters, background music, and visuals were all great. yes, there was fan service, yes a lot of the story was cliche and weird. however, chizurus grandma and ruka chans development make this season ABSOLUTELY DIFF the last season in every aspect.
this show really impressed me here. chizurus grandma dying with chizuru wanting to accomplish her dream for her grandma is such a good story arc that came out of no where. this show was the last one i expected to create a concept like that and insert it into the storyline. everything about chizurus backstory and the characters throughout the show and their conflicts, actions, arcs, and the way the show juggles them around, giving each their own episodes, its just perfect.
theres more sumi screentime, huge character developments, catchy background music (didnt like the op but ed is good), an ost that is worth listening to in fact, and overall a season of anime that was at times boring but overall on a level of kaguya sama. its that good. not amazing, as it had many flaws. but my expectations were 6 feet under, and this season broke the mold wide open. kazuya redeemed himself a lot in my eyes, but hes still pretty cringe. a lot of the comedy is alright, but the fanservice is still VERY present which brings down the genre execution in my opinion. the consistency is pretty mid, but a great ending to the season. reminds me of the pacing of kaguya sama, possibly even better. also, the visuals are better than i remember them being, i love the way they draw the characters' eyes with the fading colors and endless detail. this applies to s1 as well of course, resulting in my readjustment of its rating. anyways, magical sempai, welcome to the bottom.
Drop Explanation:
Shit just aint worth my time man, show isn't even funny and idk nowadays if I wanna sit down and watching something I wanna enjoy it. S2 was better than S1 but that's only because S1 set the bar so low. Yeah this show kinda sucks.
