Review (S1-3):
Recommended by Vivichuu, also happens to be in isekai quartet.
Damn that was better than expected. I thought this anime might be stupid because I was getting a little tired of isekais. this one really didn't disappoint. The concept was weird at first but by the 2nd episode I was into it. The characters are awesome and got even better as the show went on.
I will say I enjoyed Season 1 much more than season 2 and 3 due to the amount of episodes dedicated to the empire and kingdom, it was just a little boring to watch from the other side of the storyline for so long. It all contributed to the story, so I'm not too mad at it.
Overlord is unique in 2 ways. First off, it's an isekai that gives the protag huge amounts of power from the start. Ainz had a whole ass base, army, and godlike power from episode 1. This contrasts greatly with Konosuba and Re:Zero. Secondly, this show is more of a perspective from a villainous side. Ainz is obviously super powerful, so instead of treacherously fighting enemies to come to a goal for the greater good, he's dominating the world by being, you guessed it, an Overlord. I haven’t ever quite seen a protagonist designed this way, which was very interesting. Something like MHA and Demon Slayer has the protag fighting villains to become stronger and stronger on a journey, while Ainz just steamrolls everyone lmao. Great show, really funny, really entertaining. would be a bit higher on the level of like quintuplets or toradora believe it or not, but like I said S2 and S3 had some boring bits. It's above alot of rly good stuff bc this anime surprised me and was super unique.
Review (S4):
I really like Overlord. It has a very unique concept going into it and has a lovable cast of characters. The concept of the show itself really blew me away in the first bit of the show, but as time has gone on, the story kinda left my interest. I get that the story is trying to involve all of these countries that have affairs with Ainz's interest of world domination or whatever, but I just don't care for it.
In my previous review, I mentioned how these aspects made seasons 2 and 3 very boring for me at some points. The random lizard people took up half of S2, which I hated, and Season 3 had some boring bits with the Kingdom and what not. With all of that said, Season 4 really changed a lot of that for me. The story really picked up this season, and even if they focused a lot on these foregin affairs, I felt like it was done a lot better pacing-wise this time around. First of all, the empire has submitted to Ainz, secondly, the Kingdom is gone, and at the end of the last episode, it hints towards the next season being the last.
So, I have to give credit where it's due, this season did a pretty good job at keeping me interested. Ainz really went and just took over everything, and the funniest part is that he didn't even want to go to war, but he had to because the floor guardians wanted to. The story is so intricate yet simple and I love it for that.
The opening this season was great, and the fights (whether they were long or lasted 1 strike) were pretty clean. I loved all the character development, especially the princess. I was so interested in her because she has this double personality, and that finally got revealed. Seeing Brain and Zanac die for their country was also huge, lots of big character developments this season. I also absolutely love the way Ains was villanous in the last few episodes. He was fighting the Prince, and said "If this were a story, you'd get a boost in strength from your rage and defeat me, but this is reality" like that line was so fucking insane.
I'm just waiting for what the do with the next season because there's the Slane Theocracy and then maybe another player? I don't really know what else they could make out of the show. Definitely a well-paced season, even if it got a bit confusing at times. It's still not better than Season 1 tho for me, sorry.
