Students will explore the Art Nouveau architecture of Brussels, the European Quarter and the Royal Museum for Central Africa in order to reflect on the dark side of Belgium’s “Congo style,” the role that architecture, art, urban planning and artifacts (displayed in the House of European History) play in the European Union’s identity politics and on the numerous initiatives that seek to contribute to the decolonization of Europe’s “last colonial museum.” Visits to the cinema museum, the puppet theater, and to the comic museum will offer opportunities to analyze the relationship between popular culture and politics.
