LIBERA was founded in 1995 in Italy. It is a network composed of more than 1.600 associations, social cooperatives, movements and schools, trade unions involved in a fight not only “against” mafias, corruption and criminal phenomena, but above all it is committed “for” social justice and protection of human rights all around the world.
Libera’s main actions are connected to its different departments of commitment:
Memory and Commitment department: building an “alive” remembrance of innocent victims of mafias, together with their families, to maintain a shared and responsible memory of all people who lost their life for criminal violence.
Education department: over 5000 schools and universities are involved together with Libera in the realization of an educative path which would teach democratic legality, starting from the importance of the recognition of environmental and human rights;
Confiscated Assets Department: the promotion of the public and social re-use of confiscated assets is one pillar of our daily action, supporting associations and social cooperatives which would like to manage a confiscated asset and raising awareness on the importance of giving a second life to thousands of different assets for social purposes; every year more than 4000 people participate to summer camps on confiscated assets to take part and follow local communities on their redemption process;
International Department: as a response to the globalization of serious and organized crime, Libera is enforcing transnational strategies for human rights defense and promotion of social justice through the development of 3 international networks: ALAS - América Latina Alternativa Social in Central and South America; CHANCE - Civil Hub Against organized Crime in Europe at European level and a new-born African network; Libera works with more than 80 organizations around the world to enhance international tools of human rights defense and to promote the exchange of good practices on integral ecology and social justice.
Justice Department: in line with our commitment for the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms, the legal office of Libera is giving assistance to all families of innocent victims of mafias during trials and it also manages all civic action proceedings for Libera; finally Libera has developed a new action specifically against corruption, through the promotion of civic monitoring of public administrations and a dedicated telephone line for those who want to denounce corruption crimes.
