Hope: Believing you future will be better than your present and you have the power to make that future a reality.
Hope is not just about wishing. It is about knowing what you can and cannot control.
Examples like: "I hope he/she likes me"(even though I have never helped them), "I hope the teacher just gives me an A" (without finishing the project), "I hope he stops teasing them." (when I haven’t told him I don't like that). This is more wishing because I am putting it on other people. When I start doing things to help it happen we move more into hope.
We can use hope for creating our school culture the way we want it. We can use Stop walk talk when needed, be kindness when we see rudeness, be bravery when we see meanness to be an upstander, to be fairness when we see others left out. We don’t just wish for it to be different - through hope seek the change and take steps to get there.
Everything is not always awesome. But how can you work to make it better or the best of it?
WHAT THE SCIENCE SAYS
Research findings on the benefits of the strength of Hope found Hope is one of the two-character strengths most associated with life satisfaction and well-being. People who are hopeful are less likely to be anxious or depressed. If they do become anxious or depressed, those feelings tend not to overwhelm them. Hopeful people tend to be healthier, happier, and more successful. Hope leads to greater longevity.
