The western faction remains secluded in a temperate rainforest. Overgrown and damp, majority of the land east of the river remains sheltered beneath the canopy of large coniferous trees. While mainly warm in climate, there are areas that experience colder weather in the winter months such as the areas closer to the coast in the Sparselands, as well as the mountainous regions near Tellura's Tears.
Deer, Moose, and various smaller wildlife can be found within the Ravine as well as Bears within the western mountains.
Majority of the Ravine remains difficult to traverse, with exception for the more open areas within the Sparselands.
Commonly referred to as 'The Narrow' by its Valleyfolk residents, the temperate jungle hides a deadly ravine that snakes through the centre of the land. Carved by a glacier long forgotten, a main river cuts the territory in half and ends in a waterfall 347ft high whilst several smaller streams branch off and carve equally deep chasms through the land.
Towards the waterfall is a winding cave system that serves as the faction's main den with the entrance hidden behind the rush of water. The path upwards is treacherous and slippery.
The ground underfoot is cushioned and springy all year round. Benefitting from a temperate climate, this land serves as excellent sparring grounds for young wolves and those recovering from injury. In the spring and summer, apothecaries often gather the moss to prevent overgrowth.
The trees grow tightly here and attribute to the usual claustrophobic feeling of Waterthorn's territory. Patrols often circle the area for other predators could lurk between the conifers.
Densely forested and overgrown, this thicket is aptly named. A thick layer of moss covers the forest floor, providing a safe tumbling ground for Learners and experienced Thorns alike. Due to the frequent travel to and fro this place, prey is difficult to find in the dense undergrowth, and is generally not worth hunting.Â
Many streams cut through the Ravine, one of which ends in a rapid waterfall into a glassy pool. It's easy to mistake the water's surface for a gentle trickle, but the current is still rather strong here. The rocks are large and overtaken by foliage, making for entertaining climbing spaces. Although the mists do dampen the rocks here, so caution is necessary.
Through the trees and winding paths is a lake hidden between the boughs. The banks of this lake are rather steep and a fog settles over the water most days.
A verdant grove within the Mossbeds, many herbs and plants can be found here, though it can become overcrowded in the warmer months.
Aptly named, the Sparselands is where hunting parties usually gather. This land stretches over a large area of Waterthorn's territory, reaching the border just beneath the mountains. A variety of deer and large mammals thrive here as sunlight is able to cast light through the canopy and illuminate the forest floor.
In certain spots, the ground is uneven and sometimes pools with water, making it unpredictable for the inexperienced.
Sometimes considered the land of perpetual sunset, the Twilight Grounds are a vast range of valleys and hills. In the distant north lies the foothills of Bearclaw Ravine on the other side of the river.
Closer to the coast lies a small patch of bogland. The ground appears solid but is riddled with pockets of water and mud. It's easy for the inexperienced to get trapped here.
The prime grazing ground for many herds of deer in the colder months. The grass is amber coloured and grows tall and dense.
Lying between the Mellows and the Twilight Grounds, the Silver Burrow is a mix between grassland and forest. In the spring it's common to find rabbit burrows beneath the earth, and the deer herds find their way here in the summer.
Many ravines cut through the majority of Waterthorn's territory with this one being the most abundant with bears. Usually only a few bears reside in Bearclaw, and Thorns leave them be as long as they don't wander too far out of their usual haunts.
Bear hunts can occur and should it occur in Bearclaw, it can prove quite dangerous (or potentially fatal!) for many Thorns. The rocks are unstable in places and space is tight.
Rocky and untrodden, the Rubble is mostly a narrow passageway through the foothills of Bearclaw. It is often said that bears are sighted here, so the area is usually avoided by hunting parties. Only during the solstices do Thorns dare brave a bear hunt.
The main river that cuts through the Ravine curves and rushes in a haphazard way. The water is surrounded by steep cliffs and overhanging trees. Walkways are made by fallen logs but are notoriously unsteady.
The mountain range is also called "Tellura's Maw" by some Thorns. The hike up is more of a marathon and is usually undertaken by young Thorns when they become a Shard.
During the summer seasons a whistling howl can be heard between the peaks. Older Thorns will call it "Tellura's lament" while others claim to not be able to hear it at all.
Due to the Ravine's customs, only the lower section of the Spine is patrolled regularly, with Vanguards changing the route up to the peak every year. It's a closely guarded secret that a large spring exists at the top of the mountain, decorated with paw prints and reeds.
The Spine is usually a colloquial name for a trail up to the peak of Tellura's Maw. Following winding paths through the foothills and forested areas, the trail ends in a thin path along the ridge of the first mountain before opening up to the next.
From anywhere atop the west side of the mountain range, the glittering water of the Whispering Basin can be seen. It is a clear and reflective pool with surrounding pine forests
Deep underground is a cavern where a large beast once slumbered. Though there are only large skeletal features that remain, the promise of death lurks in each dark corner. Much of the Cage is unexplored and considered highly dangerous.
Rumoured to be beneath the Narrow, the Cage entrance is a well hidden tunnel that expands into a larger cave. The ceiling meets open air at some points in the tunnel to shed light into the cavern.
