Valleyfolk cannot freely communicate with other creatures, and the level of verbal communication they have lessens the further away a species is from their own.
Valleyfolk
Full communication, able to speak in full sentences verbally.
"This is an example sentence."
Foxes/Coyotes/Other Canid Creatures
Partial communication, able to speak in broken sentences verbally.
Faint "accent"
"This example sentence."
Bears/Cougars/Felidae/Ursids
Partial communication, can only speak in basic words, 2 or 3 words at a time.
More discernible "accent" when speaking. (i.e. felines may tend to hiss/sound raspy, bears growl with their words, etc.)
"This... Sentence..."
Birds/Small Carnivores (Weasels, Stoates, etc.)
Limited communication, usually has a tendency to "latch on" to a single word and repeat it.
"Sentence! Sentence! Sentence! Sentence! Sentence! Sentence!"
Rodents/Herbivores (Deer, Goats, Elk, etc.)
No verbal communication, but can still attempt to communicate through body language.
Attempts at communication are not guaranteed to get the idea across.
"..." confused deer noises
Familiars
If not bonded yet to their Valleyfolk, can only communicate on the same level of communication as the above corresponding species.
If bonded, familiars may communicate freely with their bonded Valleyfolk as though they were the same species.
Familiars that share a species may speak freely with one another.
If your character has a raven familiar, and another character also has a raven familiar, your characters cannot understand one another's familiar. The bond is unique to your character only.
Irina has a bonded raven familiar, and so does Perseus. Irina can only understand her own raven and not Perseus's.
Irina and Perseus's raven familiars can talk with one another, and relay the messages to their bonded Valleyfolk.
If Irina has a raven familiar, and Perseus has a fox familiar, they would not be able to communicate with each other.
Familiars can be trained to say one-word statements to other Valleyfolk/creatures. The training system is currently in the works and will be released at some point in the future. Training is currently unavailable.
Other things to note in regards to communication/relations with other creatures:
Your character CANNOT be raised by/travel with any other creature. Passing/repeated attempts at communication are fine, but your character cannot be considered part of a different creature's family.
Your character can notice a cougar hanging out in the same area a lot and be friendly with it, but your character cannot adopt the cougar into their own family/be adopted by the cougar, and cannot become a travel partner of the cougar. The relationship should be left as small interactions they share, but they don't actively live together and care for one another.
Your character cannot be found as a pup by a fox family and be accepted into the family and raised by them.
Your character cannot travel with a herd of deer.
Although your character may make repeated attempts to communicate with a different species, this does not over time improve their ability to communicate with said species. The level of understanding is static, and remains the same.
There may be events in the future that temporarily allow more open communication with other creatures. Staff will alert if an event takes place that this occurs in.
