(c) Postnatal screening

Caring for mother and baby does not end at birth. Health professionals will continue to screen mother and baby postnatally. This section is brief but focusses on one particular condition that a baby will be screened for after birth.

The image below shows a Guthrie test being carried out. A tiny spot of blood is extracted from the baby's heel and applied to a diagnostic test strip - one of the conditions tested for is Phenylketonuria (PKU). PKU is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder of metabolism.
