The Shingle (pennigeroccisor gumbi, gumb's winged-murderer) is a descendant of the shrike that is more deadly and brutal than its ancestor. This downright psychotic bird is found the rainforests of Africa and eurasia. These birds evolved immediately after the extinction and became the top aerial woodland predators in the abscence of raptors.
Biology
The Shingle is about the size of a peregrine falcon and has a wingspan of 3 feet. They have very strong flight muscles and very quick reaction times for flying through the dense jungle.
Their beaks are more robust and stronger, however it still relies on shaking to kill and its beak isn't strong enough to immediately kill. The same goes for the talons as they've grown to be more muscular, but not enough to have a deadly grip.
The Shingle has a deep fovea that aids it in navigating and catching prey. The Shingle feeds on small birds, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals and has incredibly brutal ways of killing and using them for different purposes.
Behavior and Reproduction
Shingles are solitary and each Shingle resides in its own home tree, they only come together to mate.
Shingles still shake their prey to death after severely injuring it, while not necessarily needed, its quick and easy and Shingles find it fun. Once back at the tree the prey will be impaled on the branches and either ripped apart and eaten or stored for later.
During mating season, the female shingle will fly over to the males nest to see if he's a suitable mate. The male will make himself look more attractive to the female by leaving lots of impaled prey around and leaving fresh blood on branches. He will also smear himself in blood and cover himself in the pelts of his prey before dancing for the female. If she accepts, they will mate.
While the female is developing the eggs, the male will make a nest out of fur and feathers. The female will lay 4 eggs and both parents take care of the chicks but usually only 1 of them will survive to adulthood.
