Starcroakers (Astrologobufo) are a genus of Morezaba within the salbufidae family. They can be found along the coast of Europe and northern Africa. They grow to about 8 inches in length.
These frogs have a survival strategy of spawning in great numbers. The tadpoles are pelagic and mainly feed off biofilm, planktonic organisms, and algae. As they grow, they start becoming more and more benthic. The adult is a fully benthic feeder, which buries itself into the ground with only it's eyes visible.
It has a layer of skin ontop of it's back and head where algae and other things often cover it, giving it extra camouflage. It has two pairs of fangs in it's mouth for easy grabbing of prey. They target fish first and foremost, with everything else being unpreferred prey that is still taken. On rare occasions, they may even eat tadpoles.
During breeding season, the males congregate near the shore and let out loud calls to attract females. When the females eventually show up, the males will fight each other to the death to get a chance to mate. These few days are the most deadly since the frogs are not only trying to kill each other to mate but that they're out in the open water and in great numbers.
