Mowboars (proboscissus falxdente, sickle-tusk trunk-pig) are herbivorous descendants of pigs that are found in eurasia in grasslands, forests, and savannas.
Evolution
Mowboars first started their evolutionary journey in the holocene where human activity allowed for pigs to dominate both rural and urban areas. When human society completely collapsed, so did the livestock industry and most domestic pigs escaped farms into the wild where they bred with wild boars. These pigs are some of the largest animals to survive the extinction and that is only due to the fact that they will eat practically anything. The pigs of eurasia went down a more herbivorous route and so developed a trunk to compensate for a lack of neck mobility and evolved other adaptations for a purely herbivorious diet.
Biology
Mowboars measure 9 feet long and 5 feet tall at the shoulder. Their trunk measures at 3 feet in length and has a prehensile nub for grasping vegetation. Mowboars eat mostly grasses but sometimes eat fungi. Mowboars have very strong jaws and all of their teeth are suited for grinding down vegetation with the exception of 2 long, curved tusks that jut out from the side of the face and is found in both males and females that aid them in feeding.
Mowboars have a unique feeding strategy for grass involving their tusks. Mowboars will use their trunk for grabbing bundles of grass and then using their tusk as a sickle to cut the grass. The trunk is used to stuff the grass in the mouth where it is chopped up further and ground down. The mowboar digests this grass inside of its 3 chambered stomach and colon.
The mowboar has a very stocky build similar to rhinos and when threatened, can run up to 45 mph in short bursts
Behavior and reproduction
Mowboars, like their ancestors are very intelligent but they never get beyond the intelligence level of a dog. Using their tusks to dig around in the soil developed from the rooting behavior and is a relaxing feeling to them.
Mowboar herds (not including piglets) consist of at least 4 males and 30 sows. The males are usually never around the females when it isnt mating season. During mating season, males fight each other by bashing their tusks into each other and hitting and grabbing each other with their trunks.
The teat order system and parenting methods are the same as they were with the mowboar's ancestors.
Mowboar herds have scent marked territories and have specific designations for sections of the territory. One small area of the territory is reserved for defection, another area is for wallowing, another for nesting, another for drinking, and the rest of the territory is for grazing.
Mowboars will sometimes kneel down on their front legs to graze in order to get more grass, which makes them more vulnerable. They usually hit predators with their trunks or tusks but will sometimes grab predators with their mouth and thrash them around.
