What We Smell - Journal Entry 2

Graphic representing the sense "smell". A nose.

"The act of smelling something, anything, is remarkably like the act of thinking. Immediately at the moment of perception, you can feel the mind going to work, sending the odor around from place to place, setting off complex repertories through the brain, polling one center after another for signs of recognition, for old memories and old connection."

– Lewis Thomas

Reflect on your walk today and the variety of smells you experienced. Reread Lewis Thomas’ quote at the beginning of this section. What lessons can you learn about life from pausing long enough to smell the world around you? During your observations, what was the most prominent smell? Do the principles that matter most resonate more clearly when you pause to take a deep breath?
