What We Hear -

Journal Entry 1

Graphic representing the sense "hear". An ear.
Photograph of a flowing stream.

Before you head out for your nature walk, imagine the sounds you expect to hear. Make a list of the sounds you think you may hear.  Are the sounds associated with an animal or insect?  When making your list, think about the sounds and your opinion of them.  Are the sounds pleasant to you?  Do they conjure up memories?  What adjectives come to mind when you imagine these sounds?

While you are enjoying your nature walk, focus your attention on what you are hearing.  Try to keep track of the sounds you are hearing by writing them down or recording them.  Try to see how many different sounds you hear on your journey.  Feel free to bring binoculars with you and use the Merlin Bird ID app by Cornell Lab to try and identify birds by their sounds.  If you are interested in the bird sounds, here are additional tools to help you identify a bird by sound
