Scholarly works in Malayalam devoted specifically to the study of film songs are relatively rare. In that context, I hold a firm conviction that this distinctive literary journey - undertaken in search of the depth and expanse of Malayalam lyricism - will guide readers into a realm of aesthetic delight and reflective appreciation. The approach adopted in this work centres on exploring layers of meaning embedded in the priceless and incomparable expressions of poets who continue to illuminate the collective imagination - Vayalar, P. Bhaskaran, O. N. V. Kurup, Sreekumaran Thampi, and others whose words endure in public memory.
Enriched by the musical grace of masters such as G. Devarajan and Dakshinamoorthy Swamigal, and further immortalised through the distinctive vocal artistry of K. J. Yesudas - the Gandharva of song - and the deeply expressive rendering of P. Jayachandran, evergreen compositions including Shyamasundara Pushpame, Aayiram Paadasarangal, Karimukil Kaattile, and Kalpantha Kaalatholam are examined here. The overwhelming reception and wholehearted support extended to Ganakouthukam – Volume 1, my first humble endeavour to promote and celebrate the Malayalam language, became a great source of inspiration for continuing this unique journey through music and literature. Empowered by that encouragement, I am delighted to present its second volume to all lovers of Malayalam songs and literature.
Ganakouthukam – Volume 1 was a soulful journey through the cherished memories evoked by some of the most melodious songs in Malayalam. That journey continues in this second volume, carrying forward the timeless beauty of songs and the emotions and memories they awaken in our hearts. The songs included in this volume have been selected from the Malayalam undergraduate curriculum of the University of Kerala (FYUGP).
Designed not only for general readers but also for students and teachers, this volume presents literary analysis, interpretations, and aesthetic appreciation of songs, following the same approach adopted in the first volume. The central theme of this work is the inner musical experience embodied in songs that have been inscribed in golden letters and have touched generations of Malayalam-speaking audiences.
The immortality of song, the resonance of memory, and their harmonious union with melody come together in Ganakouthukam – Volume 2, reaching readers as a musical message that stirs the rhythm of the heart.
