Therapeutic Options is a crisis prevention and intervention training program designed to equip Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) and other caregivers with the skills necessary to prevent, de-escalate, and safely manage behavioral crises in individuals receiving services. This evidence-based training emphasizes a person-centered approach, focusing on proactive strategies, communication techniques, and safe interventions to maintain the dignity and safety of both staff and individuals in care.
Therapeutic Options is a state-mandated training for all DSPs and direct care staff working with individuals who may exhibit challenging behaviors. It is required for the following key reasons:
Ensuring the Safety of Individuals and Staff
The training provides DSPs with strategies to prevent and respond to behaviors that could pose a risk to the individual or others.
It teaches crisis prevention techniques to reduce the likelihood of escalation.
Compliance with DBHDS Regulations
The Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) requires all direct care staff to be trained in approved behavior intervention techniques.
Failure to complete this training would result in non-compliance with state regulations, affecting employment eligibility.
Reducing the Need for Restraints or Crisis Intervention
The program prioritizes de-escalation techniques to minimize the need for physical intervention.
When intervention is necessary, staff are trained to use only safe and approved techniques that prioritize the individual’s well-being.
Enhancing Staff Confidence & Preparedness
Employees who complete Therapeutic Options training feel more prepared and confident in handling behavioral challenges.
It helps staff build stronger relationships with individuals by understanding their unique communication and support needs.
Promoting a Positive, Person-Centered Approach
The training aligns with Sunny Haven’s mission of providing respectful, individualized support.
Staff learn how to recognize triggers, early warning signs, and non-verbal cues to prevent crisis situations before they escalate.
All new DSPs must complete Therapeutic Options before working independently.
Training includes classroom instruction, hands-on practice, and competency assessments.
Annual recertification is required to ensure all staff remain up to date on best practices.
Failure to complete Therapeutic Options training within the required timeframe will result in suspension from direct care duties.
Employees who allow their certification to lapse will be immediately removed from the schedule until they complete the required training.
Continued non-compliance may result in termination if the required training is not completed within a reasonable timeframe.
Employees are responsible for monitoring their certification status and attending scheduled recertification sessions.
