PLEASE NOTE THERE ARE NOW CHANGES TO THE CPR/FA TRAINING PROCESS. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY
All new hires are required to complete CPR and First Aid (FA) training, which remains valid for two years before recertification is needed. Don’t worry—our trainer will remind you when it’s time to renew! 😉
Your Provider is responsible for scheduling and ensuring you have your CPR/FA certificate before you work with individuals we serve. If you are a Provider, you are responsible for paying for and completing your CPR/FA certification.
If your Provider/manager has not spoken to you about this, reach out to them! It's a requirement!
You cannot work with individuals without this certification per DBHDS regulations (regulation below for reference)
If you work directly for Sunny Haven Residential Services (SHRS) ONLY and are assigned to Collinswood Group Home, Community Engagement, or Sunny Haven Group Home, your CPR/FA will be scheduled and paid for by SHRS directly. This means you will be told a time and date for your training. You will need to make sure you are available for those dates and times to complete training; it's a requirement and will not be optional. Missed scheduled CPR/FA for these staff will not be tolerated and will result in a write-up or delayed employment.
If you are a licensed medical professional, LPN/RN - if you have a current and active license, you do not need First Aid; however, you will still need CPR training. We do require you to have a copy of your current license. If you cannot provide that, then you will have to take both CPR/FA.
For all other Group Homes and Sponsored Res Homes, it will be the responsibility of the Provider to pay for and ensure you & your staff get hands-on training and provide a certificate of completion to the Admin in the timeframe required. Admin will still send a 30-day renewal reminder email, but will not schedule or pay for your staff's training.
Already certified? Please send a copy of your current CPR/FA certificate to our office email (certifications on file are a requirement)
12VAC35-105-460 There shall be at least one employee or contractor on duty at each location who holds a current certificate (i) issued by the American Red Cross, the American Heart Association, or a comparable authority in standard first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or (ii) as an emergency medical technician. A licensed medical professional who holds a current professional license shall be deemed to hold a current certificate in first aid, but not in CPR. The certification process shall include a hands-on, in-person demonstration of first aid and CPR competency. Completion of this training is required within 30 days of hire.
Proof of current CPR and First Aid for employees or contractors is required.
There must be evidence of this certification in their record (certificate).
If the certification process does not include a hands-on, in-person demonstration of first aid and CPR competency, the provider will be cited for non-compliance with 460.

We reached out to DBHDS directly to get the answers for you—so you don’t have to! Our policy takes precedence over any external exceptions, as long as it remains within DBHDS guidelines.
A key example of this is CPR/FA certification. While the Red Cross allows a 30-day grace period, our policy does not. At Sunny Haven, certifications must be renewed by the expiration date—not 30 days after. This means that staff have 30 days before the expiration date to complete recertification, ensuring compliance with our internal standards.
Additionally, the Red Cross states:
"Some working environments may require you to renew your CPR certification annually. You should also check if your professional license requires a valid CPR certificate, as you may risk having your license lapse if you don't renew."
This reinforces the importance of following Sunny Haven’s guidelines, as they reflect the requirements of your workplace (which is here at SHRS! 🙂).
When submitting CPR certification paperwork, expiration dates must include a 2-digit month, 2-digit day, and a 4-digit year. If this information is missing, we will default to the date of course completion.
