In Virginia, Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) are required to complete a comprehensive orientation training to ensure they are well-equipped to support individuals with developmental disabilities. This training encompasses several key components:
1. Orientation Manual and Training Slides: The Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) provides an "Orientation Manual for Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) and Supervisors: Supporting People in their Homes and Communities." This manual covers essential topics such as person-centered practices, communication strategies, positive behavior supports, and health and safety protocols. Accompanying training slides are also available to facilitate the learning process.
2. Competency Testing: After reviewing the manual and training materials, DSPs must successfully pass a competency test with a minimum score of 80%. This assessment ensures that DSPs have a thorough understanding of the material and are prepared to provide high-quality support services. You must complete and submit the Test to receive credit for this training. This training will not be considered complete until the Test is done. This is a long test and a lot of material to read. Please give yourself a minimum of 1 hr to complete.
3. Supplemental Training: DBHDS periodically updates training requirements to address emerging needs. For instance, supplemental materials on topics like choking risk and changes in mental status have been incorporated to enhance DSPs' preparedness in specific areas.
