Backstory:
To be able to truly begin to understand the events that led to Nyn ending up where he is now requires one to start long ago, with Sliver’s first Channeler. This Channeler, now known as the First Master, was a legendary fighter, said to be a god in a one-on-one, but disappeared soon after teaching the art of Channeling to an apprentice. The Second Master still lives, but has abandoned his duties as a Master, having passed that role on to his two apprentices, Master Blix and Master Ompreym. Blix and Ompreym began their training at about the same time as the Second Master started becoming really wealthy, enough to make sure that this Channeling tradition wouldn’t have to worry about funds for a very very long time. Blix and Ompreym were very close during their training years. After both became Master Channelers they worked as guardians and researchers.
About 7 years ago, as Master Blix was visiting Novo Strella, he sensed the presence of a potential apprentice – a boy with a Passion fit to study Channeling – for the first time. Master Blix approached the family of the child, who asked the child if he was interested. This child was Nyn Altenova, whose family was relatively unremarkable when compared to other Novo Strellans. Nyn had been interested in duels for a long time at this point, so of course he accepted. But at this time Nyn was too young even by Channeler standards, so he would have to wait. Two years later Master Blix found another potential apprentice, who also accepted. Now Nyn was also old enough to begin his training, so Master Blix returned to ask if Nyn was still interested, which was the case. And so Nyn and Erdedrikas were brought to the two Master Channelers’ base of operation, Crescent Castle, situated in the North.
Much like their Masters Nyn and Erd became very good friends. But all of this would soon fall to pieces. The first few years of Channeler training are purely theoretical due to it being a very complex art, and the apprentices being children, but after three years Nyn and Erd were rarely allowed to test some of their abilities against some very weak Beasts under the supervision of a Master. During one of these, while overseen by Master Ompreym, Nyn and Erd were pitted against a Binding Biblilex – an odd Beast shaped like a book, weak but capable of inflicting serious harm on Memory. But this Biblilex was stronger than average. Nyn begged Master Ompreym to intervene, but the Master just cruelly stated that this would be a “good challenge”. Erd bravely fought the Beast, determined to protect Nyn even though Nyn was more skilled than her in most aspects, but she wasn’t strong enough. Nyn wasn’t hurt by the battle, but Erd was left unconscious. After Master Ompreym realized that Erdedrikas had lost more than enough Memory to reach a negative value he noted how much he could learn from this, and left with the girl, leaving Nyn behind, devastated.
Nyn returned to Master Blix, but Master Ompreym and Erd never did. The following years of training were . . . gloomy, to say the least. Nyn had lost his dear friend while Master Blix had been betrayed by the man he trusted deeply. After some time things got better, but nowhere near as good as things had been before. One day Nyn announced his intention to attend a combat school, they both felt that was a good idea, even though Channelers traditionally didn’t go to those. At first Nyn wanted to go to Pensalir, but soon got the feeling, which he claims is a sign from the Flow, that something bad was going to happen there and that he should go to Lichthart instead, and so he decided he would study at Lichthart.
