An analogy may be drawn between a class in an Object Oriented computer language such as Java, and an instance of that class. The class describes and enables the code to do some bit of work on data, while the instances are the multiple applications of that code and the individual data sets associated with them.
By comparison the CDID defines the purpose and content of a project deliverable or artifact (the terms are used interchangebaly here) - while the project deliverable itself is the "instance" of that CDID for a particular stage and time in the life of a project.
