Fortitude Valley station opened as Brunswick Street in 1890 when the tunnel to Central station opened. On 20 September 1980, the tracks were electrified through the station. Platforms 3 and 4 opened on 11 June 1996, as part of the quadruplication of the line from Roma Street to Bowen Hills. The station was upgraded between July 2007 and October 2008 as only two platforms could be upgraded at once being a busy station. When the upgrade was completed the station was renamed Fortitude Valley.
Fortitude Valley station was named after the homonymous suburb of Fortitude Valley which was named after the Scottish ship SS Fortitude which arrived in Brisbane in 1849 with immigrants.
Fortitude Valley station has four platforms consisting of two island platforms. Platform 1 is for Beenleigh, Cannon Hill, Cleveland, Coopers Plains, Park Road, Varsity Lakes and some Roma Street services. Platform 2 is for Domestic Terminal, Doomben, Ferny Grove, Northgate, Shorncliffe and some Bowen Hills services.
