Throughout my blog I have used words and abbreviations that may be difficult for non rail enthusiasts to understand. I have therefore added a glossary of some of those terms. I'll add to it as I go along.
A dead-end platform at a train station with through lines. Nambour is the only station in the South East Queensland train network with a bay platform.
Units manufactured by Walkers Limited in Maryborough between 1979 and 1986. They are the oldest units still in use on the South East Queensland suburban passenger network.
A type of electric multiple unit manufactured by Walkers Limited in Maryborough. It first entered service in 1988 when the North Coast Line was electrified to do the Spirit of Capricorn runs between Brisbane and Rockhampton which it was replaced by the Tilt Train in 2003. Since then it has been used exclusively for services between Roma Street and Gympie North.
A type of electric multiple unit manufactured by Walkers Limited and Downer EDI in Maryborough between 1996 and 2011. They are similar to SMUs however are designed for longer distance services and are mainly used on the Airport, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast lines. They are fitted with luggage racks and toilets unlike the SMUs. They are divided into three subclasses which are the 100 series made up of sets 101 to 110, 120 series made up of sets 121 to 124 and 160 series made up of sets 161 - 188.
Also known as a centre platform and it is where a platform is positioned between two tracks creating two platforms either side.
A type of electric multiple unit manufactured by Bombardier Transportation in Salvi, India. They are the newest units on the network.
A place is a small section of an additional track along a single track railway, often located at a station allowing trains to pass. It is double ended.
A platform which is positioned beside a track.
A short track branching of the main line a short stretch of railroad track used to store rolling stock or enable trains on the same line to pass. It is only single ended.
A type of electric multiple unit manufactured by Walkers Limited and Downer EDI in Maryborough between 1994 and 2011. They are divided into three subclasses which are the 200 series made up of sets 201 to 212, 220 series made up of sets 221 to 250 and 260 series made up of sets 261 to 296.
