Ipswich station opened in 1865 when the line to Bigges Camp, now Granchester opened. In 1876, the line was extended to Brisbane. The station was rebuilt in 1887 because of the duplication to Darra. In 1978, an office and retail complex known as Ipswich Central Plaza was built above the platform. The line from from Darra to Ipswich was electrified in 1980. In 1985, the old platform and buildings were demolished. In 1993, the line was electrified to Rosewood.
Ipswich serves the CBD homonymous city of Ipswich obtaining its name from the city of Ipswich in East Anglia, England.
Ipswich station itself has four platforms consisting of two island platforms. Platform 1 and 2 are for commencing and terminating services to and from Brisbane. Platform 2 is also used for services to and from Rosewood. Platforms 3 and 4 are used during peak hour only.
Ipswich station has one station entrance from Bell Street.
Ipswich station does have disability access.
There is a bus interchange outside the station on Bell Street serving nearby suburbs. The routes that serve Ipswich are routes 500, 502, 503, 506, 509, 512, 514, 515 and 529 as well as a railbus travelling to Rosewood departing at 12:35pm on Fridays. There are also many long-distance coaches serving Ipswich.
