I visited Central station on 26 November 2017.
Central is located on all lines except for the Rosewood line. It is served by services to Beenleigh, Caboolture, Cannon Hill, Cleveland, Coopers Plains, Domestic Terminal, Doomben, Ferny Grove, Gympie North, Ipswich, Kippa-Ring, Nambour, Northgate, Park Road, Shorncliffe, Springfield Central and Varsity Lakes. Some peak services terminate at Bowen Hills and Roma Street. Central is located 0.8 km from Roma Street and the approximate travel time is 2 minutes.
Central is situated in zone 1 meaning the fares between Central and Roma Street are:
Central station opened on 18 August 1889 and the first building was made of wood and corrugated galvanized iron and it was the terminus of the line. In 1891 the tunnel to Brunswick Street station (now Fortitude Valley) was opened to allow trains to travel to northern destinations. A new station was constructed in 1899 with arches and corrugated galvanized iron and a portico over Ann Street. A new entrance was built in 1901 in sandstone from nearby quarries with a distinctive row of clocks. The station had two bay platforms and two through platforms. In 1909, the bay platforms were converted to through platforms. The portico was demolished in 1954 for the construction of government offices. The vaulted roof was removed in 1966 and replaced with awnings over each platform. From 1968 to 1970, the station was redeveloped and office towers were built over the platform and the 1901 entrance was demolished allowing for today’s retail concourse to be constructed. On 20 September 1980, the tracks were electrified through the station. In the 1980s the Sheraton Hotel towers (now Sofitel) were constructed over the remaining platforms. Platforms 5 and 6 opened on 11 June 1996, as part of the quadruplication of the line from Roma Street to Bowen Hills.
Central station was named as it is located in the Centre of Brisbane.
Central station has six platforms consisting of three island platforms. Platform 1 and 2 are for Beenleigh, Cannon Hill, Cleveland, Coopers Plains, Park Road, Varsity Lakes and some Roma Street services. Platforms 3 and 4 are for Domestic Terminal, Doomben, Ferny Grove, Gympie North, Northgate, Shorncliffe and some services to Bowen Hills. Platform 5 is for services to Ipswich, Springfield Central, some services to Roma Street and Rosewood and special event services to Exhibition. Platform 6 is for services to Caboolture, Kippa-Ring, Nambour, some services to Bowen Hills and special event services to Exhibition.
