Picking a West Virginia race was tough because there weren't many options
When I saw that this was the inaugural race, I signed up!
The other West Virginia races are Marshall University (2 loops), Elk River Marathon (out-and-back on the rail trail), Hatfield-McCoy (A-B and runs from KY to WV), and Greenbrier Marathon (A-B and runs downhill)
The drive was easy for me from Morgantown since I just stayed on the interstate!
The expo was at the University of Charleston campus, and it was kinda small!
I could tell the volunteers were happy to have us there! There were tables for the marathon and half-marathon, big race distance-signs to take pictures, cookies, pepperoni rolls up for grabs
From 5-7, there was a free pasta dinner, so I came back to carb-up!
There was free parking on weekends, so I was very happy to be able to drive close to the start line!
All of the runners started together (half and full marathoners) until around mile 7-8
I felt like up to this point we ran through a good chunk of Charleston
When the half-marathoners split from the rest of us, we basically had an out-and-back towards mile 14
We ran through the University of Charleston and that was when we had the most spectators! They were lively and I had a blast running through the crowd
Since WV is an Appalachian state, it's hard to make the course as flat as possible
