Embracing Growth and Connection
A Vision Trip and Bridges Training
A Vision Trip and Bridges Training
Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,
knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward.
You are serving the Lord Christ.
Colossians 3:23-24

As a Cru missionary, continuous learning and growth are essential parts of the adventure. Part of this journey involves core training, which all new Cru staff must complete. Additionally, being part of Bridges, I get the bonus round of supplemental training specific to this movement.
When I was wrapping up my core training, I realized that completing my Bridges supplemental training might be a bit tricky. Since I'm part of a Cru team in San Diego, we don't have a dedicated Bridges trainer here. But no worries! Our friends at the Bridges team at UC Irvine are just a drive away, and we have an annual spring break trip to Big Bear Lake together, so I already knew some folks there.
I reached out to the team leader of Bridges UC Irvine, set up some dates, and off I went for a few days of Bridges core training and a vision trip. This trip allowed me to dive into their ministry, join staff and student meetings, and participate in their fun activities. Plus, I got to complete my Bridges supplemental training with their awesome team leader.
One of the coolest things I learned was the importance of punctuality in staff meetings. At UC Irvine, staff meetings start promptly at 10 AM, with everyone arriving by 9:45 to catch up and get all the chatting and silliness out of the way. This ensures that meetings start on time and shows their commitment to effective ministry. Definitely something I’m bringing back to San Diego!
I also got to go sharing on campus with Ruth, a sweet and amazing staff member. Her warmth and care for students were truly inspiring. She even supported one of our Chinese students during the spring break trip, helping her feel comfortable and included. It was heartwarming to see the impact of genuine care in ministry.
During our campus outreach, I learned about a fun and simple tool the UC Irvine team uses: a five-question questionnaire. This approach sparked meaningful conversations about spirituality and invited students to join the Bridges group. We’ll definitely be trying this out in San Diego.
Now, let me tell you about my wonderful hosts during this trip: the McDonald family. Justin and Erin McDonald, along with their two boys, are an incredible family who have dedicated their lives to loving and serving international students at UC Irvine. Their home exudes warmth, hospitality, and an unwavering commitment to their mission.
Justin and Erin have a wealth of cross-cultural experience, having served as missionaries overseas before joining Bridges. This experience shines through in their ability to connect with students from diverse backgrounds and make them feel at home. Their love for these students is fierce, strong, and seemingly boundless. They create a welcoming environment where students feel valued and supported.
Their dedication and passion remind me why I am in this ministry and motivate me to keep going, even on challenging days. I am incredibly grateful for their friendship and the example they set in loving others wholeheartedly.
The supplemental training with Trey Harmon, the Bridges UC Irvine team leader, was invaluable. His wisdom and experience in leading a team have equipped me with the skills needed to lead our team in San Diego effectively. Plus, he’s just a great guy to hang out with!
Overall, this experience was incredibly enriching, and I look forward to more fun and collaboration with the Bridges UC Irvine staff and student leaders. My goal is to complete my training to become a Bridges team leader. This will allow Bridges headquarters to send more staff to San Diego, strengthening our team and ensuring our ministry thrives.
Please pray for my ongoing training and that I might be a good leader. Pray that I remain connected to Jesus above all else and that He leads through me.
Thank you for your continued support and prayers. Together, we can make a lasting impact on the lives of international students.
