"It’s better to have a partner than go it alone.
Share the work, share the wealth.
And if one falls down, the other helps,
But if there’s no one to help, tough!"
ECCLESIASTES 4:9-10
The Message
This last school year, many of our spiritual conversations happened during our international dinner events or special events. We had many deep, great spiritual conversations during our spring break trip to Big Bear as well. We always want to try to get together with interested students in as many small or large groups as possible outside of those events, though, to study the Bible and give them room to ask and think about big, yearning questions they might have. For these, we use the Discovery Bible Study method.
Although we began our Discovery Bible Study groups later this year than last, we had some great conversations, students showed an increase in knowledge and interest in learning more about God and the Bible, and we got to invest together in a new partnership with a Navigator's student named Zach Belgum.
If you aren't aware, the Navigator's are another Christian college ministry organization on most campuses in the States and around the world. They are very similar to Cru and Bridges in their desire to seek, serve, and love students. We really love the Navigator's and desire to work with them whenever possible and profitable.
In the middle of the school year at UCSD, our student leader, Tiffany, told us about an American student named Zach in her program who had begun a Bible Study group for international students and wanted to introduce us. We met, realized our unified goal to reach international students, and decided to team up! I discovered that Zach was involved in the Navigator's ministry, so I made a call to a buddy of mine on Navigator's staff to make sure everything was above board. All sides were excited about the team-up, so we moved forward.
We finished the study they were going through and have since begun the Discovery Bible Study with these students and it has gone well. We don't always have a ton of students, but the ones who come seem to ask thoughtful questions, track with the study well, and seem genuinely interested in finding the truth about who God is, who they are, and what it means to follow Jesus.
Here is a photo from June 5, our final DBS study of the school year at UCSD. Yes, complete with pizza party, this was a really great event. And a massive thank you to Joe and Beth who provided the pizza courtesy of their church: San Diego Taiwanese Presbyterian Church.
Lauren Kish and Steve Dueck, my Bridges co-workers also had their own Bible studies going on at SDSU. We are constantly looking for students to join a small group, large group, or one-on-one Bible study and we believe the DBS is a great method.
Please pray for the students who came to these studies.
Pray for God to grow the seeds that were planted and that they would seek Him more and more.
Please pray for even more students to have and show a desire to learn more and that we can meet and invite them to study with us.
Sam Davis has focused on international student ministry since 2010 and is on staff with Cru and Bridges International in San Diego, CA. His passion for leading others into a close relationship with Jesus is shown in his general love for people and focus on discipleship.
Sam and his wife, Gloria, love to travel, meet people, eat great food, and hike.
