“When a stranger sojourns with you in your land, you shall not do him wrong.
You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you,
and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt:
I am the Lord your God."
Leviticus 19:33-34 ESV
You may remember that, at the beginning of this year, we launched a free meal and conversation event at UCSD called "Bridges International Dinner." Our initial intent for this event was to create a space for international students to enjoy a free meal, meet other students and Bridges people, and engage in meaningful conversation that can lead to Gospel presentations.
God blessed us at the beginning of this school year with some powerful church partnerships and volunteers who have all stepped up in big ways.
(Check out the stories about those partnerships and volunteers.)
(Check out the story about these dinners at the beginning of the year here.)
We are excited to share that we have also started an International Dinner at SDSU. I'll tell you about that in a minute, but first, let me tell you about how the UCSD events have been going.
Since launching this ministry we have learned a lot. We are constantly fine-tuning these events and growing in our understanding of service. Our goal is the feed these students with good, homemade food, while also providing opportunity to feed their souls with the life-changing news of the Gospel of Jesus!
These events happen once every other Thursday night from 6-8 PM. We have changed locations for this event a few times, but have landed on this really amazing spot in grad student housing on the East side of campus. It's called the Nuevo West Community Room. It has a refrigerator, 4-burner stove and oven, sink, and trash bins. It has a decent amount of seating, but we could use more seating for sure. We may eventually grow out of this space, but it works for now. It even has a game area with a pool table on the 2nd floor!
We send out marketing materials to let students know about each event. We utilize email and Instagram for mass marketing, but we also text certain students personally to remind them. On the Day of the event we also go out with posters and invite students personally as we meet them on the sidewalk.
For each event, we coordinate who will cook, whether that is us, a church group, or someone else. The local Cru students and staff also get involved. They love to come, blast some fun music, and connect with students.
The church that cooks the most for us (once per month) is Daybreak Church. They are amazing and we love them. They have really stepped it up this year. Everytime they come to cook, they bring more people to help out. They even bring their own catering equipment and have a woman named Annie leading the meal planning and preparation who does catering as her job. Annie loves using the skills and equipment she has to do ministry with us and share good food with hungry students. This church group is being led by a guy named Vincent. He is such a great communicator and super fun to work with. I'm glad to be working with a friend like Vincent.
Lauren Kish, my coworker and friend, head up preparing the program and discussion topics and questions for each event. We try to always make sure to have students leaders involved as much as possible, so Lauren MC's the event with a different student leader each time. They help to introduce the event, make sure students know who Bridges is, why we are even doing this, and deliver announcements of future events and other ways they can get involved.
Here are some of the topics we have discussion we have used so far: Hope, Achievement & the Imposter Syndrome, Love, and Stress.
Here are some photos from our old space we were using. It was on the 11th floor of one of the student housing buildings.
We don't have a ton of photos from the new location yet, but here's a few. The new location is on the ground floor for easy access and we never have to book the room, which is super convenient!
This is when Rose thought it would be funny to write this special nametag for me. To be honest, she is pretty hilarious.
We are excited to also have launched an international dinner event at SDSU this year. We began the year not planning to run one of these on both campuses as we don't have a ton of staff to lead things like this, plus not knowing all of the trials and errors that come with launching a new ministry event.
God blessed us, though, with an amazing volunteer who has a heart for international students and lives right near SDSU's campus. He lets us use his home for international student dinner events.
The international dinner at SDSU happens once a month at this volunteer's house. He and his wife enjoy cooking and hosting students. They play games, hang out, have great conversations, and share a delicious meal before diving into meaningful discussions that can lead to Gospel conversations all in the warmth of their home. Their sons add a fun element to these dinners as well and they are great at making the students feel at home.
Please continue to pray for these international dinners as they provide opportunities to serve and connect with students from all over the world. Pray that those connections lead to Gospel conversations and decisions for Him.
Sam Davis has focused on international student ministry since 2010 and is on staff with Cru and Bridges International in San Diego, CA. His passion for leading others into a close relationship with Jesus is shown in his general love for people and focus on discipleship.
Sam and his wife, Gloria, love to travel, meet people, eat great food, and hike.
