The last few months had been oddly...still and uneventful. It was unlike the manor to give its tenants a rest, and yet, it felt as though the walls were luring you into a false sense of security that you all would much too happily take. As the echoes of the servants wailing started to sound more like an alluring lullaby, you wondered if this peace would last much longer.
The turning of Spring brought warmer weather, and the pool was more popular. Cooling off in its tranquil waters was a pastime shared by many, and watched over by Wave with a tired smile. However tranquil the waters had been recently, she couldn't shake the feeling that what transpired so long ago would come to pass yet again...and her suspicions were indeed correct. One fateful morning, the pool swirled with vicious light and energy, signifying the return of the underwater kingdom. Wave called for the rest of the staff at once, and the tenants that remembered last year scattered to fulfill her request in a panic before the soldiers of the deep came for their revenge.
However, out of the pool of bright light was a shimmering large figure, familiar and forboding. Their ears were turned up in delight, and their grin was stretched far across their face, making their wrinkles more pronounced. "B-Buffet?!" Wave exclaimed, surprised to see a familiar face such as theirs. Clip was the first to come running back to the pool, and Buffet was delighted to see such an old friend. "Greetings blind bird, do you remember the sound of my voice, or has it been too long?" They boomed.
"Buffet...b-but we thought you were lost along with the Ocean after the tenants freed the people from the Queen's wrath?" Clip leaned over the edge, eager to hear what they had to say. Abyss strode in during his exclamation, huffing at being framed as the bad guy still but staying silent otherwise. Buffet glanced at her, but was not at all weary or angry. In fact, they still seemed delighted they recognized anybody in their old age. "After you landfolk left, the castle crumbled and all the treasures left behind became nothing more than rust and a memory. What was once a glorious kingdom powered by pride and bloodlust is now ruins and a hollow where many still make their home."
They paused to reflect and to allow more staff and tenants to enter the room. Lifting their arms above the pool's edge, they leaned on them casually. "Most of us merfolk still have the curse put upon us however...the water is still tainted with the disease of the past." Clip looked sad at that, asking, "So no one with gills can come back to the surface like I have?" Buffet shook their head, but let out a small chortle. "Most have already lost their minds anyway, or have you so forgotten? The water takes away sanity as well as your old way of life. I am surprised I remember any of you, for I myself should have gone feral like the rest long ago...but I am the only one who has stayed unchanged since the fall of the empire."
Buffet sighed. "It is quite boring, living amongst ferals the size of a person. I do not get lonely per say, but I do get anxious to cook for someone other than myself sometimes. Call it reminiscing on my past as head chef." Their tail casually waves up and down behind them, scattering water like pearls from their skin whenever it peeks above the surface. "Though I will admit, with the reopening of the pool, I do not doubt that some creatures will try to take over the land as well. Some of them don't have gills as you said, and others will turn the pool bloody just trying to get close to snatch anyone too close to the edge."
The staff looked amongst themselves wearily and tenants started to gossip amongst themselves. Buffet continued, "It will essentially be an all out war for a possible new food source, and they are as wild as any crypts you may have up here. Unlike crypts though, these creatures prey during the day as well as the night. They do not rest, nor do they have compassion. They may as well be the latest wave of death bringers to the manor if you do not find a way to stop them. I thought it would be fair to warn you."
"If you want some more help, I would be willing to stay in the water." With that, they give a suggestion. "Any tenants and staff that come with me can fight in the depths below, and any tenants that stay behind will be guarding the manor. Consider it home base or front lines, but everyone will most likely need to fight with the kind of numbers they have, even despite the starvation and cannibalism since you last visited."
A few tenants from the previous pool adventure came forward, with one of them being Kitty. She asked, "Do you mean...even those Kecleon that were so kind to us last time-?" They smiled, but delivered the worst news yet. "All either eaten alive or gone mad I am afraid. Possibly both since after they go crazy they start to eat each other alive, and the Kecleon in particular were small and weak. I may have even eaten one at one point. I do not remember meals past a day unless they were divine." He sighs. "I miss having a proper kitchen and cooking with a fire. A real fire."
"THAT'S NOT IMPORTANT RIGHT NOW BUFFET!" Clip scrambles about, squawking as they run in worried circles. "WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE IF WE DON'T RALLY OURSELVES LIKE TROOPS IN AN ARMY! IT'S LAST TIME ALL OVER AGAIN-!" Abyss rolls her eyes. "Shut up bird brain, yellow isn't a good color on you." He glares at Abyss and points his wing at her. "Don't forget that this is all YOUR FAULT in the first place. If you had never made that stupid wish, no one would have suffered as much as they did, Queen." Clip spits out the last word like it was poison and Abyss looked as though she was going to physically attack Clip. Wave stood between them before they could argue further.
Holding out her hands she yelled, "That is enough! No matter whose fault it was, we must get rid of this mess before it gets worse." Clip grumbled underneath his breath, but nodded in agreement. Abyss coiled her tail and also begrudgingly agreed. "Now, we have to split up who goes under and who stays above if we are to have a chance at survival. I, for one, I am staying up here. I refuse to go back to that hellhole. I will organize things on the surface right here since the pool is still my responsibility."
"I...will lead things with Buffet if that is fine. I work better in the water than above anyway." Clip honestly did not look excited to go back, but someone had to take responsibility. Wave nodded. "The rest of the staff can decide for themselves who goes and who stays, while the tenants discuss the same amongst themselves. If you wish to go under, make sure you prepare and come talk to us before you head out so we can send you all in large groups. If you are staying up here, be ready for a fight no matter where you are."
Some of the tenants seemed scared to go back, and others excited. Others looked as though they wanted their first taste of becoming half sea creature as they heard the stories, while more insisted on staying on land. It looks as though things might become a full blown war, but nothing you all cannot handle if you work together...right?
Welcome to the You Smile at the Deep, and The Deep Smiles Back event! The pool is back and scarier than ever!
This event will be active from May 1st to June 30th!
All art submissions must include at least one lined(or lineless) halfbody, with either color or shading, to be counted for the prompt bonuses.
All literature submissions must include at least 750 words to be counted for the prompt bonuses.
Each piece can only complete one prompt!
Make sure to tell us what prompt you are completing in the description of your art or literature so we can reward you correctly!
Draw your character's new form... The dark magic of the pool has changed your secondary type to water and has changed their appearance to suit, you better hope this isn't permanent. These designs can be as monstrous as you wish and mermaids of any type (octopus, eel, shark, etc.) are allowed.
This prompt must be completed before any others for this event. This transformation allows your character to enter the depths of the pool without the risk of drowning.
This is not a fusion, a character can gain the tail of a mermaid, but cannot gain the tail + design features of a primarina specifically.
If a character already has water in their typing, their typing won't change but their form still will.
This prompt can only be completed once per character.
This prompt must be at least a fullbody for artists, but can be completed with 250 words for writers.
Despite the urgency and caution in which the staff urged you to protect your home, you cannot help but marvel at the ruins of the ocean once more. Buffet says there may yet still be treasure down there and is willing to pretend to send you as a scout if you want to go searching for something to bring home. Be careful for sea monsters however...
Draw your character looking for treasure among the ancient ruins, coral mazes, and sunken ships that are scattered among the ocean floor, and even finding some if they are lucky.
This prompt can only be completed three times per character.
Clip and Wave insist that the tenants above and below will need training to fight the feral sea monsters, and worry their strength will not be enough otherwise.
Draw your character trying to master the use of a move or spell. It can be above or below water. Partners are encouraged!
This prompt can only be completed once per character.
Collabs gain an extra 100wc for this prompt.
Whether on land or in the sea, the zombies are starting to come in overwhelming waves. You find it takes a group of people to take on the hoards of creatures that are covered in kitchen equipment from the old castle.
Draw your character fighting off the zombie-like creatures of the sea dwelling. It can be above or below water. Partners are encouraged! The designs of the enemy sea creatures are up to interpretation as long as they are a mix of a Pokemon and a sea creature, like the tenants, and they are a bit fucked up looking.
This prompt can only be completed three times per character.
Collabs gain an extra 50exp for this prompt.
By completing at least one prompt during the You Smile at the Deep, and The Deep Smiles Back event with a character, that character will be rewarded a surprise gift at the end of the event. Who knows what it will be...
