For my storytelling project, I interviewed a promotora who has worked at Puentes de Salud for several years. She has dedicated this time to counseling patients on what their conditions mean and how to take care of their health. She revealed that a frustrating part of her job is patients do not fully grasp the severity of their conditions and do not make a change in lifestyle habits. She fully empathizes with her community and the challenges they face; financial hardship, low education level, and a system that is not built for Latinx immigrant communities to succeed. She loves serving her community and is always looking for solutions for the problems they face. Throughout her years counseling children and adults in her community, she realized how crucial it is to incorporate all 5 senses; sight, touch, taste, hearing, and smell. I chose to draw this because Latinx patients need providers who are willing to teach their patient’s learning styles, accommodate and meet them where they are in their journey of health and healing.
