Mushroom
We once were renowned
For color and vibrancy
Bright enough to awe
Sprawling over ground
As Earth’s first-born
We once ruled the globe
How soon we were pushed
Beneath younger ferns
Relinquished to the dark
We reconcile with death
Living quiet and simple
under shrub and bark
Too delicate for mobility
We are seldom noticed
Though we’ve learned
To survive on austerity
But for those who seek
Knowledge and opinion
Come with calm and patience
Listen to how we speak
