I interviewed a gentleman in his 50s named “Andrew” (real name omitted). Andrew is a compassionate fellow who works as a pastor and mentor at Hope Rescue Mission (HRM), a homeless shelter in Reading, PA. Andrew used to suffer from homelessness and at one point, was a resident at HRM. He now has his own house and makes a steady income through the mission.
Like many folks who face homelessness, Andrew endured many difficulties during his childhood and young adult life. He became an alcoholic at age 14 and occasionally tried other illicit drugs. He later underwent 5 surgeries on his back and shoulders, and became addicted to the opioids that were prescribed to him. His son also battled alcoholism so Andrew moved from D.C. to Pennsylvania to help him. After the move, Andrew enlisted in the military for 5 years and then served as a police officer for 10 years.
Andrew eventually achieved sobriety through prayer and community. However, he was soon after dealing with homelessness, which brought him to HRM. Andrew is very committed to his faith. He believes that teaching and inspiring others to accept Christianity at HRM is the ultimate solution to the “wide-spread suffering” found in the city of Reading. He knows there is much pain in the world, but he is hopeful for a brighter future.
The piece I created is a cut-out of a cross. On the left, I have listed several of hardships that Andrew had to endure for most of his life. On the right, I have listed some of Andrew’s accomplishments. Down the middle, I have written down several of Andrew’s quotes spoken during our interview.
