Purpose of Assessment & Function(s)/Area(s) Assessed
The purpose of this assessment is to evaluate a child's sensory patterns in the context of their natural everyday life. This assessment can determine how a child's sensory processing may be contributing to or interfering with their daily life when it comes to participating in daily tasks.
Administration (time to administer, group/individual, if there are subtests, can they be completed individually, are there specific instructions to ensure standardization, etc.)
5-10 minutes to fill out
15 minutes to score
4 quadrants
1= low registration
2= sensation-seeking
3= sensory sensitivity
4= sensation avoiding
includes 25 questions for the parent or caregiver to fill out on behalf of the child
User Qualifications
no qualifications or training required
completed by the caregiver
Materials Required
user manual
writing utensil
questionnaire
Scoring Procedure (how is assessment scored and what does score indicate)
The sensory system scores general, auditory, visual, touch, movement, body position, and oral. The behavioral scores are behavioral conduct, social-emotional, and attentional. The sensory pattern scores seeking/seeker, avoiding/avoider, sensitivity/sensory, and registration/bystander.
Using a five-point scale, each response is ranked 0-5
5= almost always
4= frequently
3= half the time
2= occasionally
1= almost never
0= does not apply
Each question will then get a total raw score based on the scores from each item. The number score correlates to the ranking column the parent lists. Based on these raw scores and the manual, the individual can determine what sensory processing areas their child is more sensitive to.
Psychometrics/Standardization (norms, reliability/validity studies)
inter-rater/intra-rater reliability is adequate at .48
internal consistency is excellent ranging from 0.89 to 0.95
test-retest reliability is acceptable at 0.80 to 0.90
construct validity is adequate to excellent ranging from p<0.05-0.01
Strengths & Weaknesses of Assessment
strengths
quick to administer
gives the caregiver the ability to administer it in their own time and understand what their child may be struggling with processing
weaknesses
Caregiver's children may react the same way to certain senses, but they may see it a different way and score it differently. So differing perspectives can affect the outcome.
