Purpose of Assessment & Function(s)/Area(s) Assessed
The purpose of BSID is to identify any delay a child may have in development and to further provide information for intervention planning and other health care providers. The Cognitive subscale assesses cognitive processing such as sensorimotor development and memory. The language subscale assesses receptive communication (understanding and identifying) and expressive communication (output of a message). The motor scale assesses fine motor and gross motor. The social-emotional subscale assesses milestones in skills such as emotional regulation and establishing relationships. The final subscale is adaptive behavior and it assesses communication, health and safety, leisure skills, home living, and socialization.
Administration (time to administer, group/individual, if there are subtests, can they be completed individually, are there specific instructions to ensure standardization, etc.)
30-70 minutes
There are 5 subtests:
cognitive scale
81 items
language scale (expressive and receptive communication)
79 items
motor scale (fine and gross)
104 items
social-emotional scale (social-emotional and social-emotional sensory processing)
35 items
adaptive behavior scale (communications, daily living skills, socializations)
120 items
The first three subscales listed above must be administered in person at a table and on the floor, but social-emotional and adaptive behaviors can be done via telehealth.
User Qualifications
reading the article and manual
Master's or Doctorate level degree with pediatric training
Materials Required
Manual for instructions and scoring
stimulus book
motor-response book
cognitive, language, and motor record forms
social-emotional and adaptive-behavior questionnaires
observational checklist
caregiver report forms
proprietary manipulatives set
Scoring Procedure (how is assessment scored and what does score indicate)
Items are scored on a scale of 0 to 2. 0= not present, 1= emerging, and 2= mastery
In each subtest the items will be ordered ranging in difficulty. Each item has a description with a number, title, where the child's position is, materials, number of trials, and time. The scoring descriptions follow the item description and will then be scored on the above listed scale of 0-2.
Psychometrics/Standardization (norms, reliability/validity studies)
Internal consistency ranges from .85 to .99
test-retest reliability ranges from .72 to .87
interrater reliability ranges from .67 to .81
Strengths & Weaknesses of Assessment
strengths
Very good reliability and psychometrics
Can be used for many different diagnoses
caregivers can be involved in administration
weaknesses
expensive
can take a long time to administer
