Purpose of Assessment & Function(s)/Area(s) Assessed
This assessment assesses 5 domains of development:
adaptive (self-care, personal responsibility)
social-emotional (adult interaction, peer interaction, self-concept and social role)
communication (receptive and expressive)
motor (gross, fine, perceptual motor)
cognitive (attention and memory, reasoning and academic skills, perception and concepts)
The BDI-3 manual provides 5 main purposes
assessment of typically developing children
assessment and identification of children with disabilities or developmental delays
planning and providing instruction and intervention
monitoring progress
evaluation of programs serving children
The BDI-3 covers a range of skills that help administrators reach a conclusion on relative strengths and delays along with identifying areas for learning to take place in typically developing children
The BDI-3 helps develop IEPs and IFSPs and create instructional activities related to the objectives identified in these plans.
Administration (time to administer, group/individual, if there are subtests, can they be completed individually, are there specific instructions to ensure standardization, etc.)
5 domains assessed:
adaptive (ADP)
social-emotional (S-E)
Communication (COM)
Motor (MOT)
Cognitive (COG)
60-90 minutes to administer
This assessment is to be completed in a private room with a trained and qualified professional and a parent observing.
The assessment is standardized, so the administer will follow the step-by-step instructions listed in the manual, and must have all items listed in the test book. This includes all stimulus materials, visuals, toys, and other manipulatives in the exact order and arrangement as provided in the assessment instruction manual.

Scoring Procedure (how is assessment scored and what does score indicate)
After all subdomains are administered, the examiner will complete the hand-scoring procedure using summary grids in the record form. All scores are found in the norms and score conversion manual provided in the test kit. Hand-scoring involves the child's exact chronological age and calculated raw score totals which leads to derived scale scores, age equivalents (AEs), developmental quotients (DQs), percentile ranks, and confidence intervals. Scores provide a sum of scaled scores, DQs, percentile rank, and 95% confidence intervals. Then combining scores from each domain will find the developmental total.
Psychometrics/Standardization (norms, reliability/validity studies)
Unable to find psychometrics on the BDI-3
for it to be reliable, due to its standardization, administer must follow step-by-step instructions
Strengths & Weaknesses of Assessment
strengths
provides great insight on developmental quotients and developmental skills and abilities
weaknesses
lengthy to administer
standardization instructions can be hard to follow so exactly
