The term was actually coined by Rene Descartes in his Le Geometrie. It was originally a derogatory term, regarded as fictitious or useless. The term gained wider acceptance from the work of Leonhard Euler and Cauchy and Carl Gauss.
Imaginary numbers have been integral to the quantum theory since its modern conception in the 1920s. Quantum mechanics void of imaginary numbers does not describe nature. The quantum wave function cannot be described solely by real numbers.
