Saturn is the 6th planet from the Sun. Saturn is the 2nd largest planet in the Solar System, after Jupiter. It is a gas giant with a radius of about 9.5 times that of the Earth. Saturn has roughly 1/8 the average density as the Earth. Saturn, however, with its larger volume, is over 95 times more massive.
Saturn's interior is likely composed of a core of iron-nickel and rock, that is, silicon and oxygen compounds. Its core is surrounded by a deep layer of metallic hydrogen. There is also an intermediate layer of liquid hydrogen and liquid helium. Finally, there is a gaseous outer layer. The pale yellow hue that emanates from Saturn, is due to ammonia crystals in its upper atmosphere. An electric current within the metallic hydrogen layer is thought to be responsible for Saturn's magnetic field, which is weaker than that of the Earth's. However, the magnetic moment is 580 times larger due to Saturn's massive size. The magnetic field strength of Saturn is 1/20 that of Jupiter. Wind speeds on Saturn can reach 1,100 miles per hour. This is higher than Jupiter, but not as high on Neptune.
The most prominent feature of this planet is its ring system. This is composed mainly of ice crystals. There is also a small amount of rocky debris and dust.
At least 83 moons are known to orbit Saturn. 53 of which are officially named.
Titan, is Saturn's largest moon. It is the second largest natural satellite in the Solar System, behind Ganymede of Jupiter. Titan is larger than the planet Mercury, although less massive.
Titan is the only moon in Solar System to have a substantial atmosphere.
