AMPS - Firewall
In 2012, Ahmed Almheiri, Donald Marlof, Joseph Polchinski and James Sully (AMPS) proposed a resolution to a paradox that has to do with a principle known as the monogamy of entanglement. The idea of the paradox is that QFT in curved spacetime predicts that black holes should emit entangled particles. This is the Hawking radiation. The infalling particle goes into the black hole, while the other escapes the black hole event horizon as Hawking radiation.
So what is the problem: Don Page and Leonard Susskind, have proposed that each outgoing Hawking particle should be entangled with past radiation, not just it’s initial partner particle. This is the paradox. The monogamy of entanglement says that this should not be possible. The firewall idea is as follows: the entanglement between the infalling and outgoing particles are broken outside the black hole, releasing massive amounts of energy, creating a kind of firewall. However, this would violate Einstein’s equivalence principle (floating in space and being in free fall is the same phenomenon). Can a fire wall appear in empty space, violating general relativity?
