Chern-Simons theory is a 3-dimensional Quantum field theory and a gauge theory. It was developed by Edward Witten.
The theory is named for S. S. Chern and Jim Simons who developed the Chern-Simons 3-form in 1974. The name of their paper was "Characteristic Forms and Geometric Invariants."
In condensed matter physics, Chern-Simons theory describes topological order in FHQE states or Fractional quantum Hall effect states.
In mathematics, Chern-Simons theory has been used to calculate knot invariants and 3-fold invariance such as the Jones polynomial.
It has also been used to create topological quantum computers.
