George Jackson 1833

George Jackson was my great-grandfather. He was recorded as a boy of 9 in the 1841 census as the son of Thomas and Mary Jackson in the village of Hovingham, North Yorkshire.

The 1851 census records him as still living in Hovingham, but in the household of a retired farmer Michael Sidgwick 1786, where his sister Elizabeth was house servant. The son of the householder, also called Michael Sidgwick 1823 was a 'Grocer & Draper'. George Jackson, 18, was a Grocer's Apprentice, presumably to Michael Sidgwick 1823, along with another apprentice, Jeffrey Balmer 1831.

George Jackson married my great grandmother Elizabeth Dobinson at Tynemouth in June 1863 (Free BMD)

The 1871 census records them as living in Salt St Bradford, he as an Assistant Woollen Draper.

For the 1881 census they were still in Salt St, at number 53 & he was still a Woollen Draper's Assistant.

For the 1901 census, he was a retired Woollen Draper's Assistant, living with Elizabeth at 4 Sunderland Rd Bradford.

In the same household there were two sons, George E Jackson 1873 (Worsted Warehouseman) Lancelot Jackson 1877 (Plumber) and two daughters Alice Jackson 1879 (Own account Milliner) and Edith E. Jackson 1875 (own acount dressmaker at home). Visiting the household was Mary J Dobinson 1856. She was presumably Elizabeth's younger sister, recorded as Mary Jane Dobinson in the 1861 census.

George and Elizabeth had the following children -

    • Thomas Jackson 1866 in Bradford
    • Sarah E Jackson 1868 in Bradford
    • Mary Isabella Jackson 1870, my grandmother, in Bradford
    • George E Jackson 1873
    • Edith E Jackson 1875
    • Lancelot Jackson 1877
    • Alice Jackson 1879
