William Patterson 1815-1894

William was the son of George Patterson and Mary, christened 26 March 1815 at High Hoyland (Mormon Record). He had a twin sister Martha.

He was recorded In the 1841 census as living at Townend, Clayton, West Yorkshire, in his parents' household -

John Patterson 20 Woolcomber

Martha Patterson 20, Fancy Weaver

George Patterson 15 Fancy Weaver

Sarah Ann Patterson 12 Worsted Spinner - note, this census (the first to document the extent of child labour) was important in reducing the use of children, at least ones as young as these, in the textile industry.

Isaac Patterson 10 Worsted spinner

Harriott Patterson 6

He married Mary Ann Unknown between 1841 and 1851. The 1851 census records him as living at Wade Street, Bowling, West Yorkshire, with his first wife -

William Patterson 36 Plasterer

Mary Patterson 36 Worsted Weaver

For the 1861 census he was in Wade Street, Bowling, West Yorkshire, still with his first wife -

William Patterson 45 Plasterer, born Clayton West

Mary A Patterson 45 Worsted Weaver Power Loom, born Brighouse

There were no recorded children of William and his first wife, although there is a possibility she died in childbirth.

William's first wife presumably died between 1861 and 1871 and, more likely, before his second marriage, probably in 1863. This was to Mary Ann Byram, who was about 20 years younger than him. A possible record of this is the marriage between a William Patterson and Mary Ann Byram in Halifax in 1863 (BMD). This a year before their first child Martha was born.

For the 1871 census, William as living at 36 Calcutta Street, Bowling, West Yorkshire, with his second wife, now with three children -

With Mary Ann2, there are 5 children recorded:

Martha Ellen 1864

Albert Ernest 1868

Mary Rosalie 1874

Florence 1880

In the 1901 census, his wife Mary Ann is recorded as a widow, living in the family of her son Albert Ernest Patterson. William therefore died between 1881 and 1901.

A bmd entry records a William Patterson dying at Bradford in 1894 at the age of 69. However, our William Patterson was born in 1815 and so would have been about 79 in 1894.
