Thomas Jackson 1795

Thomas was my great-great grandfather. He was born in Egton (c 8 km west of Whitby) in 1795 according to the 1851 & 61 census results.

The 1823 Baine's Directory of Trades and Professions shows a Thomas Jackson as a shoemaker in Hovingham. He would have been ~22 years old in that year. The 1841 census recorded Thomas Jackson as a shoemaker in Hovingham, N. Yorks aged 40. His wife Mary ? was also aged 40. Their marriage was presumably around 1825, but too many Thomas Jackson married a Mary around that date to identify their marriage. They may have married prior to 1820, because a Thomas & Mary Jackson baptised a child John 17 Sep 1820 (Hovingham BMD). If they were our Thomas & Mary, this child presumably did not survive. One of their subsequent twins (b 1826) was christened John, perhaps in memory of this first child.

The record of Thomas & Mary for the 1851 census, shows him to be born in Egton in 1795. They were still living in Hovingham for the 1861 census. A Thomas Jackson born in Egton did not appear in the 1871 census. The death of a Thomas Jackson aged 74 in 1866 (Hovingham Bapt, Marr, Deaths) was recorded in Hovingham. This age differs only by 3 years with that of the census returns, so this could be our Thomas. This is consistent with him not appearing in the 1871 census.

Thomas and Mary had the following children recorded in the 1841 census -
